General Information About Councils

ASHRAE's committee structure is the mechanism that makes the Society run. Through this structure, members formulate policy, develop procedures, and direct Society activities. Decisions made by the Board of Directors are based on the recommendations of committees. Because of this, the Board of Directors is only as effective and efficient as the Society committees.

New ideas and new programs are usually initiated in committees, which also serve as management training centers for future Society leaders. Those interested in serving on a committee are encouraged to make their wishes and qualifications known. Chapter and regional officers, and others who are in a position to know and evaluate prospective committee members, are urged to submit recommendations for consideration.

Councils are comprised of board members, representatives of related standing committees, and other members elected by the Board of Directors.

Their mission is to administer the activities and policies promulgated by the Board that concern those committees within the organizational structure of the councils.

In addition, councils approve or reject the funding of projects and programs recommended by the appropriate committees.
